Nguruman Hills - Shompole
Located on the Nguruman Escarpment and overlooking the Great Rift Valley in southern Kenya, Shompole is a stunning new property situated on a private 35,000 acres wildlife conservancy. One of a growing breed of eco-tourism camps, Shompole is a joint-owned venture between a private company and the Masaai community of Shompole Group Ranch. The camp employs large numbers of local people and the community benefits directly from the Conservancy Fees and a share in the profits.
There are just 6 rooms at Shompole Lodge and 2 rooms at Little Shompole, all of which have been constructed using naturally-occurring white quartz stone, pale thatch and with water as a principal theme and feature. Each room is very spacious with a high canopied roof, en suite bathroom, sitting area, a private ‘cool pool’ and stunning views across the savannah plains. The main lounge and dining area is built on various levels with a number of quiet reading areas for guests to sit, read and contemplate the wonderful views across the bush towards Mount Shompole. There is also a main swimming pool for all guests to enjoy.
The variety of terrain at Shompole allows for a great range of activities from early morning and evening walks to river trips, night drives, sundowner visits to Lake Natron to see the vast flocks of flamingoes, bush picnics and there are also opportunities to have nights fly-camping out in the bush. The prehistoric site of Olorgesaille also makes for a fascinating day trip.
There is a wide variety of wildlife in the area ranging from elephant and lion to leopard and giraffe as well as zebra and a number of plains game species. Birding is also excellent here with a wide range of species having been recorded in the area.
